Dr. and Mrs. Keglar Leave Their Legacy At Arkansas State

Most of us have not thought about what our legacy will be. After all, who has time between the rigors of a work day, children to provide for, friends to attend to, and family to care for? But Arkansas State alumni Dr. Shelvy Haywood Keglar ('70, '74) and his wife Robbia ('74) live their legacy every day. In addition to raising five children to carry on their belief of giving back and "seeing one's self through others' blessings", Dr. and Mrs. Keglar decided in 1997 to take out a whole life insurance policy and pay the premiums with the beneficiary being Arkansas State University Foundation. They are able to deduct the value of the premium as a tax write off, while ensuring a very large sum will be received by Arkansas State upon their deaths. This generous gift will establish an endowed scholarship for students for perpetuity. It will ensure that individuals are able to get an education, "the yeast that raises the dough for kids that came up like I did," says Dr. Keglar.

Shelvy and Robbia believe everyone has three gifts to give: time, talent and treasure. "You don't have to have a lot to give; you can make a difference with consistent small giving. If everyone gave $1 a month or $12 a year back to their University, colleges would not have financial difficulty. It doesn't take a ton of money; it takes a commitment and a heart to give back." Hopefully the students that benefit from the generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Keglar will consider leaving their legacy here too. Planned Giving is one way to be able to afford to fund that legacy. There are many avenues one can take, depending on your financial situation. For assistance planning your financial future as well as what your legacy will be, contact an estate planning attorney, accountant, or a financial advisor.
