Dr. J. D. Kelly Leaves His Legacy at Arkansas State University

Dr. John D. Kelly is seemingly just as busy in retirement as he was during 23 years of service as a professor at Arkansas State University. His days are filled with tutoring young people to be classically trained pianists, while many nights and weekends are spent judging piano competitions in four states or travelling around the globe. He said his greatest achievement while teaching was "just seeing the students succeed." He is one of those professors who genuinely cares so much about his pupils and the art of piano that he established a planned gift through his retirement fund and IRA to ensure students' success for years to come.

Because there are so few keyboard scholarships available, Dr. Kelly wanted to establish an endowment, but was unsure how to accomplish the goal without a substantial cash outlay on his part. His financial adviser, Mark Rowe, CFP® at Wells Fargo Advisors LLC, steered him to see the advantages of leaving the distributions from his retirement fund and IRA to Arkansas State University while being able to reap the tax benefits during his lifetime. As a "win-win" situation, a planned gift is often referred to as "giving it twice," since the donor, the donor's family and the donor's charity can benefit. Thanks to Dr. Kelly, deserving students at Arkansas State University will be able to pursue their passion for piano and performing through perpetuity.
