Mrs. Geraljean McGough and Dr. Bobby McGough*

– Dr. B.C. McGough Dean's Scholarship Endowment

Dr. B.C. McGough, also known as Bobby, grew up as the youngest sibling in a Craighead County family of 11 children. His mother believed in education. She sold eggs so he could ride into Lake City and go to the school from which he graduated. He developed a love for education, too. But soon, trouble intervened.

Taken as a prisoner of World War II by the Nazis, this co-pilot of a B-24 escaped three times; the third time he successfully escaped out of Germany and went back home.

Thanks to the G.I. Bill, he earned his bachelor's degree at Arkansas State. From there, he continued his education, earning a master's degree from Syracuse University and a doctoral degree from the University of Florida. It was there he met the love of his life, Geraljean—Gerry.

The couple was called back to Dr. McGough's alma mater; he was to serve as A-State's first dean for the College of Business. (He also was the first president of the Arkansas Dean's Association in 1970.) They raised a family; their children Mark McGough and Julie Mills are also A-State alumni.

Following his death, he was the first POW laid to rest at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery at Birdeye, Ark. His love of learning lives on through the Dr. B.C. McGough Dean's Scholarship Endowment, which will assist deserving juniors and seniors in the College of Business.
